ATV Training (Sit astride)
The ATV is perhaps more widely, and often affectionately, known as the Quad Bike, although the only part of a Quad Bike that is synonymous with the word ‘bike’ are the handlebars. The ATV, or Quad Bike, has unique handling characteristics, which can be quite unlike other forms of motorised transport.
Quad Bikes can be either two or four wheel drive with limited weight load carrying racks on front and rear and a towing bracket so an appropriate trailer can be used. Some ATV’s are shaft driven to a differential, and may have ‘diff-lock’ capability. These machines are highly manoeuvrable when the lock is disengaged. However, when the diff-lock is engaged it will behave just as the more common, chain drive, fixed axle Quad Bikes, which, when ridden by a skilled operator, are incredible manoeuvrable.
With appropriate training, the use of weight shift techniques for achieving tight turns at low speeds and for negotiating side slopes, ascents and descents can greatly extend the versatility of the Quad Bike, without compromising the safety of the operator.
